• BMO Global Asset Management has grown consistently by following a single-minded approach to understanding our clients’ needs, finding out how best we can help, and then putting them first. Here, we follow in the tradition of our parent, BMO Financial Group – which has been helping millions of customers meet a spectrum of financial needs for almost 200 years.

  • Our record of innovation starts with Bank of Montreal in 1817. This was Canada’s first bank and provided the country’s first widely-circulated currency. Today BMO Financial Group is one of Canada’s pre-eminent financial institutions and a significant presence in US and world markets.

We have also grown by bringing other successful and like-minded financial innovators into the BMO family. So we can also trace our roots back to London in 1868, and the launch of the Foreign & Colonial Investment Trust, the world’s first publicly listed pooled investment vehicle. We still manage this trust today.

Back in North America, Bank of Montreal began offering investment services in 1925. This was around the time that M&I Trust Company – which was to join us later - began offering trust services and then, later, retirement plan services.

In 1984 we acquired Harris Bank, a leading Midwest bank based in Chicago, which went on to develop a strong speciality in investment management services. Other acquisitions followed, including several of our boutique investment operations.

In the UK and Europe, our future colleagues at F&C Investments were confirming their reputation as investment innovators by launching Europe’s first ethical investment fund, in 1984. The company then pioneered Liability Driven Investment (LDI), including the Dynamic LDI product, to meet the needs of pension funds and other institutional investors.

Meanwhile, ETFs began emerging as a major investment product category. BMO Global Asset Management aims to be at the forefront of this development. With a strong range of ETFs, we are one of the fastest-growing ETF providers in Canada.

The next big step was the creation of BMO Global Asset Management in 2010, to offer an integrated range of investment solutions, including our boutique managers, through one company. BMO Global Asset Management then took its place as a significant worldwide presence with the acquisition of F&C Asset Management in 2014.

Our future now depends on our clients, and on our ability to continue to help them meet their investment goals. To do this, we continue to innovate and expand our capabilities.
