Graduate Stories
“BMO recognises the potential in everyone and the graduate programme here is uniquely designed to bring it out.”

Aran Bajwa 2016

After completing an Economics degree at the University of Cambridge, I joined the BMO Global Asset Management Graduate programme.  I felt this offered a unique opportunity to start my career in the asset management industry, whilst also providing the opportunity to rotate across several teams to find out what suits me best. In addition, the company operates with a relatively flat structure, providing great exposure and a real opportunity to have an impact straight away.  Most importantly, BMO recognises the potential in everyone and the graduate programme here is uniquely designed to bring it out.  After completing four three-month rotations in Emerging Market Debt, Multi Strategy Investments, Systematic Equities and Liability Driven Investment, I am now an Associate working within the Global Rates/Absolute Return Fixed Income teams.   The graduate programme, combined with company sponsorship of the CFA and IMC qualifications, has helped me establish a sound level of financial and industry knowledge. I am now looking to build on this by gaining specialist knowledge within fixed income and global rates, hoping to become a fund manager myself in the future.  There is potential in everyone and the graduate programme here is uniquely designed to bring this out.

“I feel privileged to work in a collaborative environment surrounded by people who are passionate about what they do.”

Catherine Hoyle 2015

I joined BMO Global Asset Management after graduating from the University of Oxford with a BA in Modern Languages (German & Italian) in 2015. The Graduate programme appealed to me because it is unusual to be offered the opportunity to complete rotations with a diverse range of teams. In my experience, it is only by spending time with a team that you can really gain an understanding of how it operates and whether or not you are suited to a particular role.  My current role is Associate Analyst in the GSI (Governance and Sustainable Investment) Team.  I feel privileged to work in a collaborative environment surrounded by people who are passionate about what they do.  The GSI team is truly multi-faceted, which means that my work is very varied. I enjoy identifying the material environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues relevant to companies and then raising and addressing these issues.  It’s great to be part of a team that plays an important role in communicating ESG risks and opportunities to our Fund Managers, who ultimately decide whether or not to invest in a company.

“I’ve had a number of roles since joining the company… and I am now an Analyst in the US Fixed Income team based in Miami.”

Joanna Lingard 2015

After graduating from Exeter university with a degree in Economics, I was looking for an opportunity to enter the financial services industry.  The structure of BMO Global Asset Management’s rotational graduate programme appealed to me as I was still undecided about what investment style and asset class I would be suited to. In addition, the company support’s you through the CFA, which was a qualification that I was keen to achieve post-university.

I’ve had a number of roles since joining the company beginning in the RFP team within Product Management, I then transferred across to the Investment part of the business where I rotated across four different investment teams before settling in the fixed income department. I am now an Analyst in the US Fixed Income team based in Miami.

The graduate programme has given me a well-rounded understanding of the whole business, not just all types of investing such as systemic, active and LDI, but also how these funds are packaged and marketed to potential clients. The programme has broadened my understanding of the opportunities and career paths I have available to me going forward.

“Not only does the programme give you an overview of several asset classes in the industry, it opens doors you may not have considered before.”

Jonathan Brown 2016

I graduated in 2016 with a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, spending a year studying abroad in the US at the Engineering school of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Having decided on asset management after various internships, I wanted to ensure I was joining a company that would help me grow as an investment professional. I carefully researched the companies I applied to, looking for those that had the training capabilities and experienced teams I could learn from to give me the best possible start to my career. After careful research, the rotational nature of the graduate programme, flat structure and global reach of BMO was very attractive. My rotations included analyst roles in Systematic and Quantitative finance, Multi-Asset Investments, Global Rates and Money Markets and Structuring/Derivative Fund Management.   I am now an Associate in the Liability Driven Investment (LDI) Structuring team. The graduate programme provides an excellent foundation for a career in investment management. Not only does the programme give you an overview of several asset classes in the industry, it opens doors you may not have considered before. In terms of plans for the future, for now I am concentrating on getting over the last hurdle of the CFA exam!

“My next six-month rotation is due to be in our Milan office and it will be great to experience life in the European Sales team first-hand.”

Nicholas Hay 2016

After achieving a Bachelor’s in Modern Languages from Durham University and a Master’s in European Business from ESCP Europe, I applied for the Client Management Graduate Programme at BMO Global Asset Management.  A client-facing role within an organisation which has an ever-expanding European footprint seemed to be a great combination for my language skills and financial interests. I was unsure which department to apply to and therefore a rotational programme with a company that would invest in my training and development was the most attractive option. I was also extremely drawn to the possibility of a placement in a European office.  Since joining, I have undertaken rotations in Marketing, Institutional UK Sales and Intermediary Europe Sales Support.

I have also had the opportunity to travel to Geneva for a Responsible Investment event, speaking to potential new clients and discussing our Responsible Investment capabilities. My next six-month rotation is due to be in our Milan office and it will be great to experience life in the European Sales team first hand.  Importantly, the sociable aspect is also very strong, with summer/Christmas parties, office drinks every month and lunchtime football & rugby every week, to name a few of the social activities.  The graduate programme has given me experience of so many different areas, and it is invaluable to have plenty of very willing mentors at the company who you can ask for advice.

Investment 2020 Stories
“The scheme hasn’t just ‘helped’ establish my career, it has made it.”

Jonathan Ellis 2014

During sixth form, I spent the summer gaining work experience at 3 different financial institutions, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed. This strongly encouraged me to look for opportunities to get a foot in the door within the investment management industry, and the BMO Global Asset Management Apprenticeship Scheme in conjunction with Investment20/20 seemed the perfect fit.  At the end of my apprenticeship, I was offered a permanent role in the Investment division.  Four years down the line, and I have worked as an Investment Support Trainee, Dealing Support Analyst, and now a Fund Manager’s Assistant. I am also working towards gaining the Investment Management Certificate. Without the BMO Global Asset Management Apprentice Scheme and the support of the Investment20/20 scheme, I could now just be finishing university with no work experience, so the scheme hasn’t just ‘helped’ establish my career, it has made it.

"I would recommend the scheme to anyone who is considering a career in asset management… for the opportunity to engage with a wide range of professionals and learn about their career paths.”

Lisa Kladitis 2015

I joined the BMO Global Asset Management Apprenticeship Scheme through Investment 20/20 in the Marketing team in 2015, straight from sixth form.   During the scheme I gained great insight into asset management and the professional world. After a year on the scheme, I decided to go to university. During my summer break, I returned to BMO for an internship within the Governance and Sustainable Investment (GSI) team, which demonstrates the hugely positive experience I had whilst on the apprenticeship scheme. I would recommend the scheme to anyone who is considering a career in asset management, as a way to gain insight into the industry and for the opportunity to engage with a wide range of professionals and learn about their career paths.

“The scheme is a fantastic way to allow younger people entry into a highly competitive sector.”

Fred Evans 2016

After two years studying maths at the University of York, I decided this wasn’t the route for me at that time.  I came across Investment 2020 and applied for the apprenticeship scheme at BMO Global Asset Management.  The scheme is a fantastic way to allow younger people entry into a highly competitive sector. Not only is the work experience extremely interesting, the support of Investment20/20 provides access to social events and learning days, giving you the opportunity to meet and swap experiences with apprentices at other firms. Following the successful completion of my apprenticeship, I gained a permanent position as a Product Analyst, and am working towards my professional qualifications.

“I found it invaluable having had exposure to working in the financial sector before studying finance.”

Maggie Woloski 2016

Whilst studying for my A-levels, I was unsure of what I wanted to do next and my friend pointed me towards the Investment20/20 website as an alternative option.  I joined the BMO Global Asset Management Apprenticeship Scheme through Investment20/20 as a Human Resources apprentice.  My experience as an apprentice was great, it not only exposed me to a whole network of new people, I picked up and honed many different transferable skills. I also gained great insight into the financial sector through all of the organised Investment20/20 insight events.

At the end of my apprenticeship, I decided to go to university to focus on my new-found interest of finance.  I found it invaluable having had exposure to working in the financial sector before studying finance. Since then, I have returned to BMO Global Asset Management as a summer intern in the Digital Marketing team.  Everyone I have met whilst working has been incredibly welcoming and friendly. It is really reassuring to be around such supportive colleagues who are willing to help and teach you, especially when diving into something completely new!

: “There is a strong sense of community, both at BMO Global Asset Management and within the Investment20/20 network.”

Darnell Johnson 2016

Prior to my apprenticeship, I was at college full time studying Maths, Economics and English Literature. Entering the financial industry as a school leaver was a huge leap, but the experience I’ve gained during my time on the BMO Global Asset Management Apprenticeship Scheme is overwhelmingly positive. During the apprenticeship, I worked predominantly within the European Channel Marketing team. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to be involved in the production of engaging marketing material with a client focus. There is a strong sense of community, both at BMO Global Asset Management and within the Investment20/20 network.  Following the apprenticeship, I secured a permanent role in Operations, a completely new facet of the business to me.  My experience highlights that the scheme is an excellent gateway for those starting out on their financial industry careers, including school leavers.
