With the ongoing pandemic, social isolation and lockdown have created the perfect opportunity to re-read the outstanding book Factfulness, by Hans Rosling. It centers around his view that we as humans sometimes do not appreciate progress and underestimate development. During the past 12 months, we have seen the negative impact a microscopic virus can have on all aspects of our lives. At the same time, we have witnessed the power of human ingenuity, resilience and ability to evolve, whether through the hard work of front-line workers or the creation of new vaccines in an unprecedented timeframe. Our present situation is a great reminder that we humans can turn around our fortunes if we act together and collaborate. While the impact of the coronavirus has been very visible, there are other dangers we risk underappreciating until it is too late. Without action the consequences of climate change will be severe and irreversible.

  • Responsible Global Emerging Markets Strategy – Q4 2020

Going back to basics, the price of a stock is determined by two key factors: 1. The future cash flows of that company; and 2. The price investors are willing to pay for it. In this quarter/year end, we want to walk through some of our considerations around investing and how we see our opportunity set evolving. We will finish with our annual ‘lessons learnt’ section, this time talking broadly about errors of omission while specifically highlighting two names that have been brought up by both current and potential investors.
