BMO Asset Management Inc. is a Canadian institutional and mutual fund investment manager, providing a variety of investment solutions across asset classes and investment approaches. The firm was established in 1982 as RMN Investment Counsel Inc. and was acquired by Burns Fry Ltd. in 1991. As a result of the Burns Fry merger with Nesbitt Thomson in 1994, the firm became part of the BMO Financial Group. Previously operating under the name Jones Heward Investment Counsel Inc., the company was renamed BMO Asset Management Inc. in May 2010, following amalgamation with the BMO Exchange Traded Funds and Quantitative Investments groups.
Here are the major milestones for BMO GAM in its more than 40 years of history:
1972: BMO launched its first ever mutual fund.
2009: BMO GAM’s Exchange Traded Funds (“ETF”) business was launched.
2010: BMO Asset Management Inc. is formed in Canada to offer an integrated mix of investment solutions under a single brand name.
2011: BMO introduces the BMO GAM brand name.
2015: BMO introduces BMO Global Asset Management Europe, Middle East and Africa (“EMEA”), with headquarters in London.
2017: BMO Financial Group marks 200 years in business, making it the oldest bank in Canada. BMO GAM realigns regional investment professionals into global capability teams.
2021: BMO GAM completed the sale of its EMEA Asset Management business to Ameriprise Financial Inc. to focus on building out the Canadian capabilities. BMO GAM launched its first Alternative Investment product.
2023: Mr. Bill Bamber is appointed Chief Executive Officer of BMO GAM and subsequently launches BMO’s first ever structured note-based mutual fund. BMO completes the USD$16.3B acquisition of Bank of the West and its subsidiaries.
BMO Financial Group announced on Nov. 8, 2021, that it completed the sale of its EMEA Asset Management business to Ameriprise Financial, Inc. According to the press release, the transaction supported BMO’s goals to optimize efficiency and to focus capital and investment in areas where it has an advantaged market position, including its North American Wealth Management businesses.
